A Different Approach
Having first-hand experience with the major brands in the functional neuromuscular stimulation industry, we have found the modality to be quite pleasant and effective in producing positive changes in dysfunctional tissue.
The current is pleasant compared to other devices that we have used, and the convenience of the size, combined with the operability of the touch screen interface makes conducting sessions a breeze.
Breaking It Down and Making It Simple
At some point, you may have been told that you need to stretch or foam roll your “tight muscles”.
But what if there was more to the story than the muscles simply being tight?
What if there was an underlying cause and the tightness that you feel was just a symptom?
Sounds crazy, right?... But it's not!
We will unpack this complicated process as simply as possible so that you can better understand exactly what makes our approach so uniquely different than any other method in the industry today.
Muscle tightness and dysfunction is a much deeper issue than most people think. In reality, the issue is directly related to the function of the nervous system.
When muscles become fatigued, there is a change in the electrical charge of the cells in the muscle. This results in a loss of action potential, which inhibits the muscles ability to “fire” or activate.
The electrical activity in the cell shifts in such a way that it can no longer respond to the signals that are being sent from the Central Nervous System to the motor nerves in the muscle. We refer to this process as muscle inhibition. It can occur for multiple reasons, not limited to overuse, injury, and fatigue.
The end result is a muscle that is no longer able to elongate (lengthen), which inhibits the muscles ability to properly and fully contract.
Muscle contraction can be eccentric (lengthening) or concentric (shortening). When you have muscles that are stuck in a concentrically contracted position, the ability for the muscle to perform the job that it is intended to do is significantly hampered and the resulting effect will be pain, dysfunction, and compensation.
Simply put, you will recruit accessory muscles to perform the job of that muscle, resulting in inefficient and improper movement patterns.
The body will recognize this and begin to send proprioceptive signals (connected with the position and movement) back to your brain. Your sensory nerve fibers will then begin to receive signals from your brain that will be translated as pain.
Unless corrected, this cycle of dysfunction will continue and develop until it is widespread, resulting in pain, weakness, and a cascading effect of inflammation and hormone disruption.
At Pure Neurology, we refer to this process as the Inflammatory Loop.
Deficiencies in the neuromuscular system such as an inflammatory loop are corrected using a process referred to as Neuromuscular Re-education. For more information on neuromuscular re-education you may visit our page on Interactive Neuromuscular Stimulation.
